Health care and Community development
The work amongst abandoned children raised our awareness of the medical needs including those in the wider community. Since 1999 we have been initiating programmes to provide medical and dental care for our children, local Chinese staff and overseas personnel. This led in 2004 to the opening of a Health Services Centre in a major city in northwest China meeting the specific health issues of many of our children and those of our Chinese staff and overseas personnel and also seeks to promote medical care for the poor and disadvantaged in the local community. For many in China access to essential health services is still very limited.
'After falling off a bridge whilst at work, Mr W was found a week later at the train station with a severe infection in his lower leg.'
'His leg could not be saved but we were able to provide and fit him with a professionally made prosthesis enabling him to have a hope and a future. '
